War and State Formation in Ethiopia and Eritrea

چکیده

Introductory Note I was particularly interested in Georg Sørensen’s paper, “War and state making – why doesn’t it work in the Third World?”, as this is a question with which I have struggled myself, including this paper on Ethiopia and Eritrea (which provide by far the best cases for a link between war and state formation in sub-Saharan Africa), which I wrote initially for a conference at CERI in Paris last year. I hope that it will provide a useful case study, to set alongside Georg’s broader discussion. CSC, February 2001

Research in the war zones of Eritrea and northern Ethiopia.

The paper engages in the discussion of conducting research in war zones, initiated in Disasters by Barakat and Ellis. It looks specifically at possibilities for research in the war zones of Eritrea and Northern Ethiopia during the 1980s, and notes the ways in which this context differs from wars in the former Yugoslavia to which Barakat and Ellis mainly refer. The authors suggest that the uniqu...

Wars and Child Health: Evidence from the Eritrean-Ethiopian Conflict.

Conflict between and within countries can have lasting health and economic consequences, but identifying such effects can be empirically challenging. The identification strategy exploits exogenous variation in the conflict's geographic extent and timi...

Stakeholders’ perspectives on facilitators of and barriers to the utilisation of and access to maternal health services in Eritrea: a qualitative study

BACKGROUND Wars affect maternal health services by destroying health systems. Eritrea experienced two wars with neighbouring Ethiopia. Despite this, the maternal mortality ratio (MMR) in Eritrea fell by 69% from 1590 per 100,000 live births in 1990 to 501 in 2015. This study aimed to examine facilitators of and barriers to the utilisation of and access to maternal health services in Eritrea. ...

Aloe pulcherrima – a beautiful Ethiopian endemic

The aloes of Ethiopia and Eritrea are moderately diverse. Edwards et al (1997) recognised 38 species, including Aloe vituensis which has yet to be located north of Ethiopia’s border with Kenya, so it is not, as yet, an Ethiopian Aloe. The most recent complete survey of aloes in Ethiopia and Eritrea (Sebsebe Demissew & Nordal, 2010) recognised 46 species, again including A. vituensis. Since that...
